While the secularization of the public sphere is often considered a hallmark of modern democratic societies, religion has not vanished from contemporary life.

On the one hand, religion can still play a role in group identity.

On the other hand, with new modes of communication and strengthening civil liberties, individuals can find themselves confronted with different forms of religious practice as competing options.

How can we understand the relationship between personal liberty and religion? What kind of role ought religion to play in contemporary life?

Is there a distinctive thing called "religion" or just a plurality of cultural practices?
